3rd Grade  Reintroduction of typing skills with Mavis Beacon.

4th Grade Introduction to "PrairieHill Publishing".  Start with simple bitmap graphics in G.I.M.P.

Students will be introduced to 'bitmap' graphics and allowed to explore the nature of bitmaps using the GIMP (GNU Graphics Manipulation Program).

Basic GIMP tools will be introduced. Later students will be re-introduced to PowerPoint and challenged to explore the similarities and differences between bitmaps (GIMP) and vectors (PowerPoint) graphics.

Basic bitmap tools/concepts introduced will include. File creation and saving, color selection, paint brush and brush selection, magnifying glass, RGB characteristics, erasure, copy and paste, rectangular and oval selection, smudge/smear, and file loading/saving.

  • G.I.M.P. (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an Open Source program originally written for the Unix Operating System.  As such, it is totally free!!!  You can download it and use it easily at home!! It is an extremely powerful and professional package.  In its second version it has been ported over to the Windows Operating System.  For more information on GIMP licensing, versions, tutorials and availability visit gimp.org 

7th and 8th Grade
Who's in the News?
  1. Students are to use a search engine to find 10 different news and information sites.  The first five stes can be 'common' news sites.  ie. cnn.com, nbsnews.com etc.   The second group of five should be foriegn sites and foreign news services' English language sites.
  2. For each day of the project  students will visit each site and 'note' the major stories in each site/newspaper .  
  3. Students will create a MSWord document that:
    • a)  lists their selected web sites
    • b)  writes a brief one or two sentences on the top story for each sites.
    • c) then they will go through each site for local news and note that on their  daily 'logg'.
