~News From Mrs. Pickel's Pickle Patch ~
First Grade
Week of May 19-23
Science - We will be finishing our school year learning about plants. We will learn all about what a plant needs to grow and how to care for a plant.
Math - We have started chapter 11 in math --- measurement and fractions. This chapter will have the students measuring with connecting cubes to determine how many units long an object is, along with measuring with inch and centimeter rulers. We will also be learning about fractions - 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, and 1 whole. We have completed counting coins and telling time. Please continue to have your child review those concepts at home, as they were difficult concepts to learn. Again, any help would be beneficial. Please continue to practice math facts at home. Learning math facts is a life long skill that only develops with continued practice. Taking math timed tests twice a week is still a requirement. All students must get to level 30 by the end of first grade. Practice, practice, practice! Any help at home would greatly be appreciated and make such a difference!
Reading/Phonics - Guided Reading continues to go well. Please be sure your child spends time each evening reading their G.R. book to an adult. It truly makes a great difference in the classroom. Remember to have your child practice their vocabulary words each night too. The more practice they get, the faster they will become fluent readers. Be sure your child returns his/her G.R. book in the front of their Agenda each day!
Accelerated Reading - Each child in first grade is A.R. testing. Please be sure your child reads their leveled library book several times after bringing it home on Monday. They will always take their computerized test each Thursday or Friday. Taking an A.R. test any sooner will not be an option, as will any later than Friday. I encourage each child to read their book several times, with an adult's help, before attempting their test. Be sure to read and discuss each book that comes home with your child. Asking comprehension questions about the book would be beneficial to your child. Also, be sure all library books are returned and fines are paid by Monday each week. Without books and fines paid, your child cannot check out new books.
