Lunch Program

LUNCH PROGRAM

We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet their health and nutrition needs.

Prairie Hill School District is participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program for the 2022-2023 school year and we are very excited to introduce breakfast at Prairie Hill Elementary School this year.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer free breakfast and lunch to all this year. The loss of free breakfast and lunch was not a decision that was made at a local level. Congress decided not to extend the waivers that were in place during 2020-2022.

I would like to emphasize the importance of the school lunch program. For many children, the meals that they receive at school are the only meals they have access to. Your participation supports the program and therefore helps those who rely on it for their only nutritious meals of the day.

The pricing this year will be as follows:

Full Price Breakfast = $2.25

Full Priced Lunch =$3.50

Reduced Price Breakfast = .30

Reduced Price Lunch = .40

We are now serving Domino’s pizza. The pizza adheres to the National School Lunch Program guidelines by offering a whole grain crust and reduced fat cheese. This makes it healthier than the average slice of pizza but just as tasty.

Another change to our lunch program in the past few months is the introduction to scratch cooking. Along with a salad bar everyday we offer a soup of the day. Each soup is made from scratch including the base. We cooked 120 pounds of chicken, low and slow, to create a delicious bone broth which we use for most of our soup bases. We then shredded the chicken to add to future soups and our chicken enchiladas!

One of our soups this month was Knoephla. It’s a soup that’s popular in North Dakota and it contains potatoes and dumplings. Yes, we also made the dumplings from scratch. It was a big hit!

Our goal is to serve our students healthy, nutritious meals involving as little processing as possible.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have.
